I think the canyon design works the best here. I like the color selections.

I concur with what you've done here, it is indeed "an improvement". For what it's worth, Darrell, I think you made the correct decision not pulling the multicolored drop shadow from your title. It keeps the movie poster aesthetic going. The social media icons look better with a little bit of space between them. Your typography is looking good and that background picture is awesome. That pic is really doing a lot of the heavy lifting here and you had the good sense to get your content out of the way as much as possible. I do like the relocation for the main nav to the upper left as well. It makes it a little easier to see and use.

I don't see a phone version of your design and I'm not entirely sure the second pineapple themed layout needs to be there. If that is a sample inner page layout for your website, I think you'd be better served sticking to the cool landscape theme you established on the first design for your homepage. Maybe different background photos for different pages. Also, on your first design, I don't think the social media icons need to be that big.
