Elle Barre Project 1

Post by Elle Barre »

Hi Class,

I haven't formatted the mobile view yet, but I want to get something up today Sunday, so maybe I'll get some timely feedback. First, this:
Here’s a website designing outfit. I’ve NEVER looked at one before, a designing site. I liked Ericha's Laura Maltby site. :- )

https://www.wix.com/blog/2021/02/how-to-make-a-website

Here’s another one, it's got a variety of ideas, but all white, white, white, I can't look at them, it's dizzying to me:
https://nicepage.com/website-design

Here’s a simple “business card”, not interactive site that inspires me in that its got beautiful pictures and easy scrolling to look at them, BUT, on the first scrolling, a white guillotine-type page covers everything up from top and bottom! Yechh! Not only does the white page contain retro-quality logo art (such DULL grey-black against plain, blah white). I do not like websites that have actions I did not choose. Like here, you start scrolling and this white block appears. I think it looks bad, it's like slapping a child's hand away, and, it’s just rude how it appears there, in my way, it feels like. It’s my nephew Kiel’s business and they probably don’t need to advertise, but for the www presence, they had to throw up a website. I think I will ask him what the response to it is... yeah, good excuse to invite him and his wife and four kids to lunch. I mean, invite myself over to their place for lunch.

Check this one out: it’s amazing and tres chic and super cool! Interactive, like Zillow/MLS touring a house, pretty, but still, it’s to the point: this is a pretty pretty STORE: buy this product, we’ll make it a real pleasure to consider it, and purchase. For a minute.

And now, here's my design:
Computer Magic is my old publicity company from long ago and faraway, but, it's a good name that covers a LOT of bases.

Maybe I can edit in the mobile format and my signature later, however you do the siggy. :- ) Thank you, you are all so talented at this. You inspired me to think I could, too.

Hi Elle, I really like this design! It's a different style that's very unique and draws the viewer in, I like the use of typography and color, the navigation on the right is easy to read and understandable to most. I only have a few critiques/ ideas for this design. First I think your colors are really nice, but I personally think you could take one or two of them out, maybe the green at the top, I like the gradient but it might flow better if you brought in the colors already in the piece like the blue and pink to tie those together. The square behind the C I'm not sold on, but if you want to keep that idea you could change the color of the C itself? Otherwise I think this is a really good concept and I'm excited to see where it goes!

Here I made couple of those improvements... good call people. That old green 'header' bar was left over from a previous design!

Looking at the one, you changed and uploaded to the comments.

I like your website. It's nice and got quite lovely colors on it.

The buttons on the sidebar to the left don't take up the whole space as my brain expects it to tho,, so maybe make those bigger to see how the design changes and I can't quite put my finger on what exactly, but something is setting off an alarm in my brain saying something is wrong. Maybe it's your name going into the picture or the type of font you used for the typing, but it's not making this site very nice to look at.

Ignoring that, I love how you designed your buttons, and the gradients on the top and bottom of the page make it look lovely and unique. It got an old-time feel like with those early 2000's websites I used to play on as a kid, so very nostalgic feeling, and I love it.

I think for me as a user the first design is the better of the two and has a better balance about it. I like your initial color scheme but I am wondering if a different warm color might help, possibly something a bit closer to the direct compliment of your initial scheme. The other thing I would look at would be the script font for your name, maybe something with a bit more readability. Otherwise it looks like you are off to a good start.

Note: I'm critiquing the revised one Elle posted here.

A website about your daughter. Heee!

I like where you are going with your design here. You've got good use of contrast throughout your design. Nice work with the transparency too. Really adds visual interest. The layout is clean and easy to see. I like the picture too. Good placement on it. It draws the eye over to your navigation. It says a lot about your subject without you having to spell it out in your bio. Good placement on your text, too. Your top text is bright, bold, and easy to read and nicely placed. Your navigation is easy to see and use. Your colors are much stronger as well here. Your blues, pinks, and teals are really working well together.

Looks like you've pretty much made the fixes I recommended in my email. At this point I'd recommend vertically shrinking the header just a little further so it cuts through the center of the title type. Shrink the footer to be of similar height. I don't think your buttons need to be little skeuomorphic metal buttons. I think just text (maybe a touch bolder) in your nav bar will work fine.

Good effort!

Definitely Lake Tahoe, good for ski goers. I’d touch the photo a bit under PS to match the colors of the design.

Hi Elle
I like you website, i looked at your edited version and it looks a lot better already! I like the layout you have with your name overlapping the image and going above your body copy. One thing i would do differently would be to make the navigation on the left a bit bigger and maybe make your name the header of the whole page as well.

Hi Elle,
Cool design you have here, I think my favorite part is the color choice. I really like the mobile version of your app more than the web version. Your web version has some weird color choices like the dark green and black. I also think you name font is out of place next to the other font. Its fun and creative but maybe to fix it you could squish your name together and get them closer.

You have a set of interesting design choices here seeing your updated version I really like the buttons you did. I don't know what it is, it feels retro (which is a good thing!) it just looks cool. the color palette you have is beautiful, blue and green very nice! The only thing I would change is the typefaces, you have some of them work some of them don't. Other than that I think your layouts are amazing, very concise and crisp. :D
