Hey Brooke,
Good job on your designs, to me these really match the theme of the content. I think using the old coat of arms creates an image of a long standing and respectable organization. As for which design to choose, I think the first one with the black reads a little better as less colors creates less visual clutter.

I really like your redesigns of the original website! It definitely gives off an academic vibe. I do prefer the first design, the colors and layout stand out to me more. I would space out the navigations to go across the entire black bar but overall you did a great job.

I love the blue, fancy design! The gradient works perfectly with the image you chose. It's nice and structured.
