Project 1 Preliminary JGY

Post by JoseGarciaYuriar »

Hello everyone!
These are my designs for the preliminary critique. My 1st set of roughs I went think looks kind of modern a lot of websites I found have a very monotone look and I just put all the things where they usually would be on a website easy to navigate links at the top with a large central image that can be changed to anything for the fonts I did a simple serif for most of it with just my name being center in a more handwritten messy font. For my second set I wanted a more outgoing design, for the colors I went with an analogous scheme of yellow and green, I tried to keep yellow as a minor highlight to make it pop a little more in its scarcity. For the second layout my goal was to make it have a sort of rigid grid structure that could easily be expanded or pushed onto other pages and layouts. I created these layouts in InDesign and inspiration for me came from https://www.soul-waves-vinyl.com/ which is just a website for a vinyl store I thought looked nice and https://onepagelove.com/ for just a sheer variety of landing pages to look at.

Hi Jose!
Personally I think both designs have their own strengths and weaknesses. The first design, which you said was inspired by more modern websites I think has a good layout. Modern designs are made for easy access, and your tabs, paragraph, and other information is grouped together in a way that makes sense to the viewer. However, it does feel very robotic, with the monotone colors and simple font. As for the second design, I can definitely feel your personality through the bright color palette and font. I think if you combined both traits together you would have a very powerful and easy to read design. Nice work!

Hey Jose,

I enjoy both of these concepts , I like your mobile version for idea one and your weblayout for design two I enjoy the sleek modern look of look one but also really enjoy the creative and tasteful look of look twos website layout the mobile version of the desing however I would do a little differently with a couple placement adjustments and making it a bit more uniformed but overall i liked your concepts love the photos you choose and the colors.

Hey Jose!

I do enjoy both layouts!
i'd say the mobile layouts catches my eye more than the desktop layouts. The first desktop layout, it will be a bit difficult to read your paragraph since it's just black text over a image! I suggest perhaps cutting the image a bit to make more like a square with a rectangle text box to the side of it!
With the Second Design, I having a bit of issues with the layout itself and the locations of the buttons, I think if they are in a better, less spread out order it will increase the popularity for me! (Of Course, these are opinions but do think of this!)

Excited to see your final products!

Hi Jose,

I really like how you took two different routes with your roughs! The first one feels very calming the only thing I'd say is that the body text is a little hard to read on the desktop version. The second design is very fun but the green is a little overwhelming since the text and boxes are quite close together.

Hi Jose,
I love that muted sage green color and simple mountain background you have in your first design, and really like how bold you decided to go with the overall presentation of the second design! However, I do think there are some minor issues with how different the fonts in the green and yellow design are, and the navigation seems a little harsh because it's so symmetrical and doesn't establish an importance in hierarchy. But I think your modern approach in your first layout was very successful, and the formatting for your mobile version looks really good as well. Other than that, I think these design ideas are a great start. Good job!

Hi Jose,
I really like the layouts that you came up with. I especially like your first layout, as I feel like it is so peaceful. I really like the type that you chose for the layout as well. Visually it looks like it would be much more straight forward than the others. Overall I think that you did a really great job on both layouts!

I think the first one is better. The desktop version is really nice, the mobile feels a bit empty. The colors are tasty and the font is cool. The layout of the bio in the corner is also cool. I think you could use less words in vertical format for the pages navigation and simplify it. It could be bigger or bolder or simpler to allow for ease of navigation. I think the font on the bottom should match the one that your name is in as well. I also think your name should be above the pages buttons and the email address. I think this looks really good though and I am excited to see it finished!

I like your first design, Jose. It looks like a coffee table book. That large image really sells it.

I can't tell if it's a cover of a coffee table book or a page out of it. I love the way the image goes all the way across it and your white header and footer act as frames for the whole thing. It also makes them stand out, which draws the eye to your navigation and to your class info. I even like your choice of fonts, the hand drawn looking title works well with your serif type. The lack of color works as well. It really makes it feel like a page and also does not interfere with the image. It really stands back and lets the image supply all the color. Instead, the black and white contrast makes your supporting content and navigation very visible.

I would make the image much larger on your mobile layout. Like to the level it is on your computer layout. Maybe only show a chunk of it. And keep the white frame around it like you have in your computer version. Your navigation on your computer layout is a little jumbled. The columns don't seem to have any organization. Maybe make it two columns with one column as your projects and one column for your Home, References, and Resources. I'd also make the large image go off the edges and leave your white header and footer as a top and bottom frame. Add some spacing between the paragraphs of your bodycopy.

Not bad!

Hello Jose! I really like your first design over the second, the photograph of the sky makes it much nicer to look at. Something I think you should keep working on is definitely your text, I think they could be a bit bigger so there isn't so much empty space in between the sections.
