Project 01 Prelim

Post by Kym_Griffith »

For my two designs I really wanted to try out different ideas for each one because I felt like I had way too many ideas to work with.
My first design I decided that I wanted to use a previous Vector cityscape image I made and incorporate it into the design. I thought that the color pallet of the blues and purples was a nice fit for a website. This is also something that I noticed a lot of other Graphic designers including in their porfolios, so I decided to try it out. I also did not want to over complicate the page so I tried to keep the font simple and neat.
My second design is more straightforward and personalized. Based on the Color pallet I chose of Green and Blue I decided to make a "lily pad" design in the Project links. I also experimented with a funky font for the resources link, However I am still on the fence on whether It is better to leave the funky font and add more or get rid of it entirely.
Some websites that inspired me include:

(this last one is a very fun, interactive portfolio I thought people could enjoy  )

Hi Kymberly,
I really like how you decided to go two different routes with the color palettes of your designs! I love how you successfully designed your city scape layout's navigation and how you used a typeface that's really easy to read. I also like the darker colors you used in your other design, however, it's kind of hard to read the font over the project links. Perhaps you could lighten the background of the lily pad links or even lighten the text so that it's easier to read from afar. Overall, I think you did a great job with the composition of your homepage designs, both with the mobile and computer layouts, and I think the navigation of both are successful as well. Great job!

Hello Kimberly,
I love the night city life atmosphere you went with for the first layout. The blue and purple combined together add a very modern feel to it, and it really transport the viewer to your mindset. I like the funky font you’ve chosen for the lily pad design as well. I do think though you could integrate the font into other parts of the text to make it feel more linked into the design. Overall, very unique directions you’ve went here, and the layouts express a lot of yourself. Nice work!

Hey Kym!

First off, your first design is incredible! love how it pops out! I would say I don't think the wall of text needs a shape behind it!

Your 2nd design seems more like a layout of what you wanted to do but I can see a in progress of it!

Excited to see the final product!

Hi Kym,
I LOVE the first layout. It reminds me of my favorite thing to watch.... the roku idle screen! I feel like the desktop layout for this one in particular could be slightly empty. You could try moving something things around to fill it out. I think that the phone layout looks really really good and is balanced out well. Overall I think that you did a really great job with your layouts!

Hi Kym,

It's cool that you went with such varying designs, they're both really creative but the first design with the cityscape was definitely a standout to me. I especially liked the colors, however I noticed that all the colors were really saturated which made it hard to read the information.

Oh, I like that twilight city one, Kym. Such a cool vibe.

That city scape is so detailed and has such an awesome visual texture, it immediately draws the eye. The evening gradients are similarly eye catching. You do a good job of reflecting that colorscheme in the rest of the composition as well. You have good margins throughout your composition (though the padding get's tight in spots). I like the waveform strokes and little dotted outlines of your mobile version makes you name and buttons look like little neon signs to go with the gritty urban landscape of your website. Your title fonts are bold and snag the eye, daring it to read them. Your navigation is easy to see and, hopefully, to use.

I think you've fallen victim to too many containers here. Your bodycopy doesn't need the box around it; it will show just fine against it's background and your class info will show just fine in the city sky without needing a box around it. Your bodycopy also doesn't need to be quite that bold. It's a little shouty right now. I'd recommend brining your dotted lines and waveform strokes into the computer version as well.

Good work!

Hi Kym! I really love your first design with the cityscape, everything lays out nicely and looks like it belongs together. If I'd have to change something, I think you should swap the fonts around that you used for your name in your designs. The cool colors make it feel cyberpunky so I think that stylized font you used in your second design would suit the first much better.

I like the first one with the city better. I really like the art. It reminds me of the ROKU scrolling screen but in a good way haha. The colors are very pleasant. I think they are a little dark overall and you could benefit from either lightening one of them, or adding a wee bit more white. I really like the font but im not sure it matches that clean style of art. Perhaps a more stylish sans serif would be cool. Im also not sure it needs the circle for the bio, I think everything could be centered for the bio section and imply the circle with the shape of the paragraph. Overall I think the design is really cool and I look forward to seeing the final product.

Hi Kim, I really enjoy the purple/pink color pallet that you chose for your first layouts and the use of a city scape is very unique and something I wish I thought up of. The "about me" section of the site looks okay, some of the boxes can be aligned better, but besides that I think it's a pretty solid design. I don't like the second home page layout as much as the first, it has a very dark color pallet that doesn't look as nice as the first home page design. I do like the font thats used for the text "Resources", but besides that I'd say use the first home page design for your final.
