My Site Is Now Up :)

Post by Melissa_Armstrong »

Greetings,

I was able to get my site onto the server...after a couple hours of trying to decipher my notes written in class on how to connect.

http://www.grc175.com/student/fall_2011 ... index.html

I hope it looks okay...I checked and all the links seem to be working.

I know the overall theme may be dull to many, especially for those growing up in Reno. I grew up in farm community in Roseville, CA and I can remember getting the greatest chills of excitement as a kid when going over 80 and seeing the Reno skyline at night for the first time. I remember it just being so bright and fun. I still get that same feeling of awe when I see the Reno skyline at night from the back parking lot on campus. :D

I greatly appreciate any and all comments and advice.

I look forward to seeing all of your sites. :)

Best Regards,
Missy

I think the site looks great and the photo is beautiful, though I get the opposite reaction when I see the Reno skyline... I have lived here far too long for me.

Just some minor suggestions to consider if they suit you:

1) the diamonds by your name seem too squeezed in. perhaps shrinking them would create more space or shrinking the text?

2) the body copy seems a bit too long to my eye. indent them a little perhaps?

3) I am confused by the 'I' before the Fall 2011, it seems like a stray letter, though I think you mean a divider line. I don't think you need it.

Otherwise it looks good to me.

Oh, one other thing... the blue links on the black doesn't really work. I am not sure how you change the color because I couldn't change mine, but both of ours would be better if we could.

And you need one of those scroll bars on the contact page. According to my notes, in that container in the css rules you go to Positioning and make the overflow 'auto'... that is supposed to give you a scroll bar so you can scroll down to read all the text. that is just my notes, and I never guarantee them. I am sure someone else knows how to really do it.

:lol: Yeah, I had a feeling most would get an opposite reaction to the Reno theme. I am certainly not a fan of gambling and actually walking/driving down Virginia. I like to appreciate the casino lights from afar. :)

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

I completely agree with the diamonds being a tight fit with the name. I just never realized it till you pointed that out. I think shrinking name text should do the trick, that wa the diamonds can stay the relative same size as the other three.

For the body copy, do you mean the content area where I have the text? I do have a slight indent and tried to add some padding but I agree that more may be needed.

In the bottom logo I have "GRC 175 Web Design & Publishing I" I thought it was an I but perhaps it is supposed to be a 1. When I look at the top logo of the project one instructions, it appears to be an I but I am not completely sure. Perhaps it would be best to omit the I...I also think the font used does not show it as an I clearly to where it does in fact look like a divider of sorts.

Yeah, the blue links on black are a bit hard to read. I am researching into it. I believe it is a CSS addition of when the link is active to where you put:
a:active {
text-decoration: none;
color: none;
}

For the contact page and others, since I have all the content within the content viewing area, would I still need the scroll bars since there is nothing to scroll through? I remember learning in class last week how to do that but I thought it would not be needed for what I have.

Thanks again for all the great advice. :) I will change the things that I can figure out how to do...it seems most are minor fixes and tweaks.

Best Regards,
Missy

Looking pretty good, Melissa. I like the Reno gambling theme. The night sky and the background blend together seamlessly to give it a neon effect even though there are no glows on it. It's also a good, clean layout that compliment's the info it's presenting. You've come a long way since the first designs. Good work.

A couple of suggestions:

- I would reduce a little bit of the padding at the top. On my display it looks like the design is pushed toward the bottom.

- The class is officially called "GRC 175 Web Design & Publishing I" and it's successor is "GRC 275 Web Design & Publishing II", so that's a roman numeral I at the end there.

- I'd take a look at your margins on a couple areas of your design. As has been previously mentioned, your name is being pinched by the two red diamonds. You might want to shrink your name down a half a point or so to give it room to breathe. I would also shrink "GRC 175 Web Design & Publishing I Fall 2011" a touch and move it in so it's an identical distance from the left side of your bottom bar as the TMCC logo is from the right.

Otherwise, it's looking very good. Hail Krull!

I don't see the problem on the contact page at home that I saw in the lab, so perhaps the scroll bar is not necessary.
For some reason I saw it there... can't remember what browser I was in.

I think the scroll bar she is talking about would be on the contact page. Your info gets cut off.

Its pretty easy to change your link color and action within your properties. (there's a little button on the bottom of dw that says properties). You can do it within your code as well, I just find the properties GUI pretty self explainable.

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice. I was able to fix a few things. :)

http://www.grc175.com/student/fall_2011 ... index.html

I made the name smaller and moved the diamonds away from the wall. The bottom logo banner text is now centered and I verified it was a roman numeral I. The email links are no longer blue. Played with padding a bit but not sure if I have it perfect yet. I noticed the need for scrolling in Firefox so I changed the contact page a bit so it all fits. I ended up creating more problems making changes but I think I got them all fixed.

Thanks much! :D

You were in the air force? Cool. My little cousin is in the air force.
But they won't tell us where he is. He's working on a secret project, what project it is or where is on a need to know basis, and apparently they don't feel that his family needs to know. :(
