Mark Nichols P2 Prelim. Critique

Layout 1 - Didn't do a 2nd page due to the fact they will look identical, just the text box, and photo layout on the 2nd page would change slightly. The About button is what the highlight would look like as you hover over, and once clicked will stay that way so that the viewer recalls which page they are viewing.

Same here, 2nd page would look identical to keep it simple and smooth, as for the home, that's what it will look like as if you are hovering over, or are currently viewing.

I think the first layout would be good as the home page, and then the second layout could be the other pages of the website. The two layouts have the same imagery and would be good together I think.

Mark-
I enjoy the first design a lot. I think that the image that is in the background on the right is really visually pleasing. I also like the color scheme that you used. Great job!

I'd say, of your two designs, I like the first one better. It's got a brighter feel to it than the second one and I like the colored navigation over on the left of the page. I like the colors and contrast of both designs.

Both of your designs have a bit of schizophrenia to them. They have these neat distressed brush stroke top banners and then super clean layouts below. I think you should pick one or the other and either clean up the top banner or distress the rest of your page. Also try a thinner serif type on the navigation to better mach the logo.

I really like the watermarked image in the background. That's a strong touch.

You've got a nice look to these. I'm interested in seeing where you take it.

A karate site should have a picture of turtles, somebody bowing, and someone getting a kick in the face. I would also need a map to your dojo where all this is happening. And a list of your favorite karate movies so that I can learn a few moves before I sign up.

The buttons should be a hand doing a karate chop. HI-YA!!!!!

The first design is very eye catching, and I especially like how you've incorporated the logo into the menu buttons. My only suggestion would be to add a couple more transparent images in the background to set some of the framework of your containers as in your second layout. Juice.

I really like the first design better. I really like how the buttons go down the side of the page and the orange really makes them stand out. My only suggestion is to maybe move the button navigation bar a little down because it is a little too close to the top header.

The second design reminds me more of a website layout, which is why the first layout seems pretty cool to me. They have the same feel to them, so I think you could go either direction and be fine with it.

Both designs have good layout but i'm leaning more towards your first design just because the navigation bar adds more visual interest to your design. I would like to point out the spacing of your boxes though. Currently your design is slightly off-balance and I think spacing would help you solve that problem. Other than that, good work!

Really cool design, I like the background image that you have on the first page. One thing that I think would help your design is keeping that lighter background that you have on the first page throughout your entire website.
