I think both of your designs are good, and with a little tweaking would be excellent.
However, I like Rough 2 (the brown and colors one) best. It embodies that clean, classy 70's look very well, and would only need a couple of fixes to make it great. First off...the header is hanging off of the right side, it just needs to be re-sized to fit with the rest. Your links spacing isn't consistent. I think setting the 'home' button to the far left and then re-spacing the three middle links would work well.
Rough 1 (the action figure) is an interesting design but doesn't say 70's to me like the other one does. The layout is good. If you re-align the two thin stripes at each side to fit your header width it would look better. Your name and link text is hard to read. The size and style of font is good, it's the stripes that make it hard to read. You say it is unbalanced, but you can fix that by making the figures bodysuit, shoes, and ponytail tie black.

Happy Designing!

Hey Kaylyn!

Out of both of your designs I think you second design is much stronger. Though the layout on you first design is pretty interesting, the colors clash too much and makes the website very hard to read. I like your both illustrations though and think they are very cute.

For your second design I agree that you could find more and play with 70's style fonts. I like the color scheme though and the use of the wood texture, very stylish and classy.

I like the style and layout in your first design. It shows your creativity. The yellow font on the black is a bit hard to see.

I like the style used in your second site. The colors used remind me of the furniture styles that are being used recently.

Love it! Love the illustration and color choices, layout is clear and easy to read. I definitely like it better than your other two designs (although those are pretty dang good too). I'm digging that funky 70s vibe, for sure. The black background behind the body text is kind of a downer but tbh I don't know what other color you could do. Great job!

Hi, Kaylyn!

OK, you've obviously got a facility with design and artistic ability -- now it's time to refine it. Both designs have potential, but I'm not sure what the narrative or "story" behind your designs are. For those of us who work in design, there's a working definition of design as a process through which we (creative people) convey meaning, whether it's designing ephemera, ads, posters, point-of-sale displays, architecture, products, or anything else.

So, pick the design that says the most about who you are and/or who you want to be, and refine it. If you're going for retro, study that retro period until you know it like a Hollywood set designer. There are "fashions" in design that shift over time: Color, illustrative styles, typography, everything lives in a certain place and time, and a skillful designer can curate these elements to convey meaning, set a mood, take us to a different place ... whatever.

You've got the chops. I'm really interested to see what comes next for you!
