I like how you play with composition on both designs. The top purple design stands out for me, how you added contrast and background patterns towards your design.

I think I like the second set with the solid background a bit more. For me the set with the 3 images is a bit distracting from the content and I find my eye straying from the content on the page to look at the background images. Although that might be fixed with making the background images fade back a bit by increasing the transparency or just muting the colors. But I don't think that is what you were wanting to go for, just an idea.

Hi Katrina,
I really like the bottom design, the colors flow nicely. Maybe you could make play with type a little more. I am sure you are already planning on this because its just the first critique. The type also seemed a little bigger than it needed to be unless you like it that way then go with it.
