I agree with Rebecca that combining the logo from the second layout with a black and white photo would look great. I think a thicker weight type for your sub-headlines would help create a better hierarchy and balance out design.

Heya Brian.
On the first one, I like the landscape photo you chose and the simplicity of your text. You also chose a nice, inviting picture of yourself as well. I think this design would benefit from some more consideration into the layout, and either containers or at least some borders. It all feels kind of mushed together, and on first glance, my eye can't quite determine the most important thing about this site. A real header would help too, I think, and some sub-headers for your copy. I also like the pink accent bar above your photo and would like to see that color utilized more elsewhere.
On the second one, I do really like your logo (even though on first glance it of course makes me think of Facebook, which you could probably use to your advantage) and I think the overall flow of the design is better. I would still work on adding some borders or containers for different sections of your page, and I would tweak the fonts for your name, since that's pretty much the main idea. Maybe add some significance to your links too with fonts or color, versus just having them sitting there like nothing special. And I still like your picture, but I'd definitely crop out that yellow door, haha.
Personally, I like the second one better! And Dannaway's homepage is awesome.

Adding in another vote for the second design, I'm really liking the layout and the way you incorporated your logo into it. I am going to add in the recommendation about the photo as others have, though. It seems sort of out of place against the rest of the design, like it needs to be in halftone or monochrome to fit in better. Or a rounded border, try playing around with it then see what works and share it!

Hi Brian~
Both designs have a lot going for them. If I had to choose, I'd pick number 2 since I really like the BF logo, and I like the photo with the door in the background rather than the version on design one without the door. I think the door adds an interesting visual element to the page. Normally I'.m not a fan of text columns that stretch across a page, but in your case the use of a larger font seems to make that OK. I'd just make sure that your page is setup so that it has a max width limit so that if a user views the side on a larger monitor the text won't be spread out in one or two long lines.
On design one, I really like the photo of the mountains at the top, I think it is a creative and visually appealing design element. I also really like the black and magenta color scheme -- I have always thought magenta/black was a very appealing color scheme. What I'd really like to see would be the logo you used for design two incorporated into design one instead of the simple 'Brian' line at the top of the page. Maybe you could modify the logo to make use of the magenta color -- if you figured out a cool way to incorporate the logo into design one then that would be my favorite.
Very nice work on both.

Hey Brian,
I like the layouts of both of your pages and the placement of your content.
•1st layout: I feel that although you were adjusting the color of your image to match the top bar it isn't working out very successfully. I also think that against that black background the photo looks a to be just stuck on there.
•2nd Layout) I love the logo! I also really like the clarity of the layout, the only thing I would change is the picture of yourself. I think that the door behind you takes a lot away from your design.

Your second design is much stronger I believe, especially if you are going for a minimalistic approach.

I like first one the best but I suggest to scale your photo down a smidge.
