GRC 175 Learning and Discussion Forum

Hello classmates,

I just want to express that critiquing in such a visible and lasting way (not like raising a hand and shouting something out in a group critique that's forgotten 10 minutes later) feels super uncomfortable for me because I am still such a design noob. Finding the good things is easy, but how can I suggest ways for someone to improve their designs if I hardly know what I'm doing myself? I suspect some others may feel similarly so I'm tossing it out there.

I also want to broadcast a "thank you" to Taylor for getting the ball rolling. It takes guts to be the first!

I understand where you are coming from. Critiquing is hard, but it is a skill you will need if continuing this degree path. I have my AAS in graphic design and I'm now pursuing my 3rd year & BA in Graphic Arts Media Technology.

Remembering when I first started, it is hard to pinpoint what "good design" is. Once you start designing more, you realize what works and what doesn't or what's out of date, things you should never use, etc. As you continue down your path with learning, research, by watching your classmates and listening to your professors, you'll start noticing if certain aspects of a design is working or not. It's hard to explain. The best thing to do is just say the first thing that comes to your head of what you see in day to day design or what you think is good.

There is no right or wrong because all designers are different and unique. It's how the DESIGNER interprets yours/their clients' critique. The designer's job is to listen to critique and BEST SOLVE the PROBLEM for their client. It's helpful to say what you're thinking and it's beneficial to LISTEN to critique and not take it personally. As a designer, it's your job to know what's best, with research, observing, learning, and practice. It's different with everyone.

No matter what level of design experience you have, say what you think.

I'll post a reply because it's part of the process. I consider critique a platform to present the work at hand and help others by making helpful critique regarding layout. I would like to dive right in and post but I too can be a bit shy. Thank you for doing what you do class. Thanks for posting.
