Hello. Nalani Nickles here again.
Thanks to everyone for the helpful critiques on my roughs. The sky layout barely edged out the space layout in people's preferences so I went with that one for my final. I changed the logo color to be more cohesive, lost the text box, and adjusted the photo coloring so the text would pop out more (along with added drop shadows). I think it feels open, inviting, and happy. The imagery is also meant to represent new beginnings, fresh ideas, inspiration.
Two of the helpful websites I found:
https://www.themuse.com/advice/6-things ... -all-costs
It's a very clear and concise list of dos and don'ts along with the whys. I'll keep some of these in mind going forward with other parts of my portfolio website.
https://kinsta.com/blog/portfolio-website/
This breaks down more of the individual pieces that should be part of a portfolio website, and details on each one. I think this one will also continue to be helpful for additional pages of the website beyond the homepage.

Your design is so bright and interesting. I like the colors you choose for your type. It has good contrast against the background.

Loving the radiation, Nalani!
I am starting to love the background, even though it might hurt my eyes if I put the brightness up too much (lol). I like how you use drop shadows for your body copy; it helps the body copy pop out better and become more readable. Great job!!

HI,
I like the soothing blue of the photo. The type is kinda hidden but the overall layout is cheery and fun. Thank you for sharing.

Yeah! You went with the sunrise one. Nice!
My very favorite bit of this one is the light source on your drop shadow matches the sunrise and the direction of the light from the sun. It really adds depth to the whole thing. I'm also glad to see you pulled the bodycopy out of the container, it totally didn't need it and it frees up your bodycopy. Everything is pretty well placed on your design. It's just this side of breaking up so there's lots of room to breathe. Now your layout and the gradations of the color of your background photo give your website structure. I mean, your footer is literally the ground. this structure carries nicely over to your mobile design as well.
The bottom margin is a little tight, but I get why you did it. I'm not 100% sold on the left aligned type. I'm wondering if it would have had a bit better structure if the type was justified.

Hi Nalani, your website is so peaceful and the colors are great too. Really like how you put a drop shadow above the text as if they're being illuminated from the sun helping them stand out more. I also like the placement of everything it's easy to navigate. Really good job.

Hey Nalani,
Love this design! It makes me think of dawn patrol during the balloon races. I still think it's super cool how the sunlight comes up and filters out through the clouds. That on top of the drop shadow for the text gives such a neat effect. Super straightforward and easy to navigate. Nice work!

Hi Nalani!
The type casting a shadow to match the direction of sun rays of the background is a really nice touch, as well as your name being in that pale blue instead of pure white. It's a very clean and open design!
