GRC 175 Learning and Discussion Forum

Hi! I took a lot of the feedback and suggestions from the preliminary critique, I ended up going with the first design, I enjoyed the look of it and the way the layout was, I changed the colors of the text and navigation bar, changed the opacity of the background image, made some of the text larger, and overall improved the look of the design. I also made the boy type have a larger weight so that it is more easily read, I also changed the colors of the design, instead of using multiple hard to look at colors, I picked a color that was in the background image, using the color of the shadows on the mountain top and used that as the color, the blue really brought everything together in my eyes. Thank you everyone for your feedback!

This is nice, works and sets a nice connected vibe between the image and the colors, I think it all works nice together. I feel it is cohesive. I like the color palate. I think the adjustments you made really worked. Sometimes I have trouble picking things I think could be improved. If I had to pick something, and this is such a minor thing, I might on the mobile site, lower the email address just a hair.

I like your designs! The colors and background work well together. One thing I would say is that only two projects are listed, I assume you will add the other two project 3-4 later. Another very small thing is that in the desktop version, I think your email could be pushed down a little bit just to give it a little breathing room from your name at the top.

You've got yourself a nice clean design here, Cole.

Your layout is clean and well organized. I like the well delineated sections. Your typography is very strong. The use of one typeface in different weights and versions always serves well to unify a design and it does so here as well. It also makes the script type in your logo really stand out. By and large, your use of contrast is good too. It makes most of your type stand out and very easy to read. Your navigation is easy to see and use against it's huckleberry blue bar. Nice choice of background image too. It'd cool and refreshing and, most of all, calming. It provides a buit of color and a source of color for some of your type and your navigation bar.

The whole design does seem a little crowded though. I think you could have reduced most of your text (at least your navigation, title, and bodycopy) by a few points and let them breathe a little. Also, your title vanishes into your background photo. It would look better in black, like your logo.

I'm glad you went with the image of the mountain. I also liked that you went with picking colors from the image to use for the colors in the design itself. Off the top of my head the only thing I can think of to suggest would be to move the GRC 175 text up from the bottom a bit on the desktop version so it has more space beneath it as it does on the mobile version, and make the "about me" and "inspiration" words black so they pop off a bit more. I almost wonder if the body copy also couldn't be that lighter version of the typeface like you have in the links. But I don't know, it seems pretty good.

Really love your final layout here - it's super approachable, calming almost but not in a bad way (sometimes people think calming means boring). I get designer meets Bob Ross vibes and Bob Ross is freaking awesome (in my opinion)! It totally screams outdoors and Northern Nevada and being a Sierra lover myself, this layout feels like my happy place of being out in the mountains.

In regards to the design, I feel your name logo looks fantastic against that backdrop and your font choice for the layout works very well and is easily readable. My only minor suggestion would be to add one more complimentary color to the layout just to provide some pop however you'd have to be careful of which color that would be and what it would be used on (ie your test, headers, nav bar - though I love the color of the nav as is so perhaps text)? Thats more subjective than it is necessary though as I would want to steer you from what is already a fantastic overall aesthetic. The main reason I thought you should add one more color is the "Inspiration:" section header is a little hard to read from a glance (not impossible though).

Overall, great refinement of your original layout - much cleaner and very well organized. Sometimes it's all too easy to get too wild with a layout that things become more distracting than complimenting and what you did here is very hard to do in terms of finding that balance of aesthetic meets function. Looking forward to seeing you build this out. Awesome job!

I like how you fixed your colors to something darker, making it easier to see and keeping most of your original design.
The picture in the background gives off the natural, relaxed vibe to it, and I love outside, so I love the website.

This is beautiful! There's so much nature and calmness to your design, I love it! I think the color choices and changes look really well together! The colors go so well together because of the pond and mountain. I just think the font and color choices for the font look amazing! It's all very clean and organized I love it!
