Aharon Williams project one preliminary critique

Here are my two layouts for preliminary critique:
1. On this layout I wanted to create a graphic based navigation menu and use proximity to create the different sections required for the project. I used grayscale to create contrast and used a "handwritten" type to give the design a little bit of texture and grit.
2. On the second layout I'm attempting to use color and size to create some emphasis and contrast. I think the colors work well together and the varying sizes of type help to create a focal point, but I do want to work on the layout (specifically the location of the navigation menu) Edit: I did change some of the sizing to give it some breathing room.
Two websites that I find insprational are http://dribbble.com which is a "Pinterest" for graphic designers. It is full of awesome Illustrator renderings and are great inspiration for taking renderings to the next level and looking for new ideas and techniques. It is my "how did they do that?" website. My second site is http://www.aisleone.net/ which is a blog for minimalist and typographical design. The site shows many examples of modernism through the years and displays media from many sources.
