project 1 prelim......

Post by kpargs »

Okay, so I went on a sunshine jumble design idea. Because I have an affinity for chaos, and I love Bauhouse design aesthetics.

And then I decided to go to the darker sides of things. Because I'm an avid bone collector and folk horror fan.

These are the websites that inspired me about websites. I loved the sheer volume and all the different looks and feel, and broad spectrum of types of websites.

These websites helped me think thematically about my designs, and how not to botch them too badly.... :?

The class videos came out on Sunday this week, so I have to admit, I just cranked these out, ALL the input and suggestions will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks y'all.

Hi Kirsten, These designs are really well done! I really like the look of the first concept, the shapes in the background and the letters of your name is a really cool thing to do, I would continue with that one for sure. The second is also really well done, I would take out the shape behind your name. For the first one I like the use of the letters but you could also spread the different letters around the page so they're not all clumped up and that might bring some visual interest to the piece, I might also use a different color for your name to make that pop since that's the most important text. I'm excited to see where these end up!

Hello Kirsten!

I think thematically the first set would be really cool to continue with as it works if you want to use it for your other projects or own work. I did have to look up Bauhaus as the term rung a bell but I couldn't exactly remember what it was, but based on my quick google search I would recommend adding more colors. Bauhaus looks like it is full of contrast that comes from bright colors. Definitely don't be afraid to push the envelope! I didn't even learn that myself until Dan's typography class and I finally opened my eyes to the possibilities.
I sort of rushed with mine as well since I wasn't able to make the Tuesday class, but you have a great starting point and so many ways you can grow from here. Good luck!

Hey Kirsten!
These designs are amazing! I really like how you are showing your personality through both of them, it is also interesting to see how two of your interests vary from one another when set visually side-by-side. I might be a sucker for Bauhouse too because I really enjoy how you created the first concept. It would be really cool if you could create an animated gif with your name in the bottom corner, whereas your name starts out all fine and readable, but then falls down making the mess of letters. I also do like how you placed your navigation on the top right side, it is very organized and makes the entire layout spacious. My only critique so far would be to maybe decrease the opacity of the background, so that it would not conflict with the text on the screen. Besides all that, great work!

Hello Kirsten!
My favorite is your first design! The colors and shapes in the background work really well for the flow of the page and where the eye travels. I think that the blue and yellow are perfect, as well as the jumbled letters, I think it's clever! Overall, it is right to the point, with all of the necessary links being projects. One thing I would say is that in the mobile version there is a link to go to about me but is absent in the desktop version.

Hi Kristen.

In terms of your layouts, I like the dark horror-themed design you have, as it's pleasing to look at compared to the yellow one.

It took me a minute to figure out where the buttons were, though because they are so small, maybe draw more attention to it if you keep it that size or make them a bit bigger. Or move them. And on the mobile version, the hands not being in the center is making me upset, so you could move them to line up in the center with your type as it seems to be chilling to the left side of the screen.

As far as that goes, it is a charming design, and I like the horror dark-themed one with the purple type. It's fun.

Fun, these are great. Out of all 4, I think the mobile version of the first concept, (the "bright" concept) is really solid. It is well laid out. I think just based on that one, I might tend to go in that direction, but I think you certainly could go with either going forward. One small item, on the email address for the web version of the brighter concepts, the spacing/alignment seems it might be a little off from the text above it, if that makes sense.

I actually like the first comps layout and the second comps imagery. It seems like there are balance issues in the second site and I would suggest perhaps bringing the color of your font to a higher contrast to compete with the heavy imagery of the background. On the first comp the asymmetrical balance has a nice flow to it but with the jumble letters in the lower right, have you thought about dropping their opacity or their saturation to help with them competing with the rest of the composition? Otherwise it's an awesome start and I look forward to seeing what you decide.

Okay, I'm usually all about the high contrast layouts, Kirsten. But that first design. That is RAD! So yeah, I like the first one better.

A couple of things really stand out to me on the design. The first is that wordle "letter mountain" you made out of your name. It immediately catches the eye and brings more than a little fun to the composition. Such a great texture, too. The other thing that snags me is the color. I would not have thought mustard and blue would go together so well, and yet here we are. I like the way you use tints and shades of your mustard and blue to add extra visual texture is great as well. Your background image adds a geometric texture that guides the eye through your composition and adds to it's visual interest. I feel like I'm flowing upward in your mobile layout and to the right in your computer layout. Nice job putting the center on your "letter mountain" so it looks like the whole composition is exploding out from it. Typographically the thing is pretty strong as well. Good typeface choices. Your navigation is easy to see and use, too.

I'd unsquish the TMCC logo. It looks weird down it it's corner. I get why you did it, but I'd recommend building your "letter mountain" up a little higher on your mobile layout to the slope doesn't need you to pinch the logo. I'd also left align your bodycopy on your computer layout and add a space between your paragraphs.

Great work!

I’m really into horror/ghost, creepy stuff. I like the hands reminds me of ghost hunters the tv series. I’d play with font sizes and styles.
